(From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual school picnic was held here on New Year's -Day. The weather being favourable, there was a xocord attendance. The ladies of the district ably helped the committee in providing refreshments on a i-ery literal scale for the children and adults. Races and other amusements were provided for the childten, end a?l goi prizes. The adults enjoyed tlimeeiv^ .ir D. Watkin's paddock with the usual picnic games. The social held in the schoolroom in the evening was well attended, and kept merrily going until it was time to go and bring in the cows for milking on the morning of January 2nd. Unusual interest was attached to the social as being a farewell to Mrs Birkett, who has ably filled the position of schoolmistress here for the last three years and is now giving it up. The School Committee and other friends showed their appreciation and esteem by presenting Mrs Birkett with a handsome silver teapot. Mr Phillips, in making the presentation, said it was with very mixed feeling of pleasure and regret that he was making this presentation. Pleasure because there was always a pleasure in giving, regret because he knew they were losing a valued friend and a good schoolmistress, who had always worked harmoniously with them. Messrs Evans and J. and F. Farrell gave every satisfaction in supplying the music for dancing, and Mr J. Farrell was the right man in the right place as 21. C.
