Referring to Sir Sandford Fleming's cabled remarks about the Pacific Cable, Sir E- Barton expressed pleasure that both Canada and New Zealand are beginning to recognise that the obligations of New South Wales and other States taken over by the Commonwealth were forced on the Federal Government by the constitution and were not sought.
As to the proposal for laying a State owned cable between Australia andfndia, he did not think 1 any proposal would be made by any State or the Commonwealth to have further experience in working 1 two cables in competition.

Private advices from Canada show that at the annual meeting of the Empire League held inthe Dominion a few weeks ago, a resolution was adopted advising the Government to send a delegation including at least one Cabinet Minister to Australia to discuss the misunderstanding over the Pacific cable.
