Borough Engineer's Report.

* The Jingineer reported to the Borough Council on Monday night as follows:: — CUI4VERT AT CEMETERY. That the culvert under the cemetery road near the inner gate was in a precarious- condition in consequence of the recent floods. A tunnel would be the be.-t way out of the diffiriulty. but he would lodk further into the matter before recomm eliding- a tunnel. CULVERT IN DEVON STREET. He had examined the culvert under Devon street leading from the pipe Jrain which commenced in Dr. Whit--tou's property and found that its area was more than doiiiblc at the outlet than that of the pipe. The water might also have been dammed back by the jilaugotfuiku stream, which would aggravate the difficulty, for otherwise the ditch from Devon street, to the M'angotuku was quite clear and of fairly amiple dimensions. The creek required cleaning out in the upstream side of the culvert in Day.son street near Mr Hoods property. GOVER-STREET. He recomlm ended that Gover street be curbed anxl channelled from (xill street to Molcswvorth-street, cL-e the footipath would be liable to bo washed away. CARRLN&TON ROAD. The wash-out on the Carringlon Road had been trestled and decikod with sleepers. SALTWATER BATHS. The average number of men employed at the baths for the past fortnight was !). The north and west wall (foundation) for dressing boxes had been bro.ught up to the lininhed level, also for main buikling. The office for the clerk of the works was completed. WATERWORKS. The wat'erw<-rks eng'uuer reported slight damage to tihe weir by the re. Mx\t floods; aftout fiO feet of cvo^t plaicks having been carried away. Sheathing posts and planks and some •stone were also carried away on the opposite side. Some of the planks on the slojping frown have rif-en up, owing to the breaking of the iron strap which formerly went over them. He inspected the damage and founicl the above statement to be correct. An expenditure of £10 would make the damage good. * FOREMAN AND MEN. The foreman and men had been 011gagetl in metalling Govcr and Molesworth streets, in forming foot/path in (J'jlbert street, repairing broken culvert in same street, tres-tling Carrington Road v/ash-aut, and general repair*. COVNCTL'R DECISIONS. The engineer was in«l rue toil to t; ''i % about the work required at the ccmotery cuhcrt. H« was aJ.^o instructed to take steps to repair damage at waterworks.
