*«. • (from our own correspondent. J Despite the execrable weather- experienced last week the work of loading the Home boat was successfully, if slowly, completed. This fact speaks volumes for the Waitara roadstead as a place of shelter. The shipment of meat was a record one, and the quality as usual of the best. With "better access to the outlying country via the Otaroa and other roads, the industry would receive a big fillip. According to the new valuation roll just received by the Town Board, an increase of £739 in capital value is shown this year. The nett value for rated is now £45,380 as against £44,641 the previous year. This will yield a general rate of nearly €160. Subscriber to the library are increasing, there being now 48 members. With the funds derived from the recent concert some 50 volumes will be added to the library, and an increase in membership will immediately follow. Although in existence only nine months over 150 new books will have been added to the previous large list. favoured with a fresh breeze and more moderate sea the Joseph Sims sailed for Collingwoqd on Saturday. A further endeavour is to be made to melt the stony heart of the Minister of Lands by asking an appropriation for the completion of the Otaroa Road. Without doubt the obstacles that have been placed in the way of retarding this absolutely necessary work is disgraceful in the extreme. From this side of Tarata on to Whangamomona a beautiful loti#of country is lying idle through the niggardness of the Government, or perhaps as is often remarked, for the monetary consideration of people living elsewhere and interested in staying development. Whatever the causa the obstacles should -•c removed and the district dealt with fairly and squarely.
