SOLEVILLE
(To the Editor.)
Sir, — The two letters which have been addressed to you on the subject of thf name "Soleville" show that Mr Courtney has a very commendable desire to perpetuate the name of a worthy farmer, and that his critic objects to the name by which Mr Courtney proposes to attain his end. I agree with both parties to the dispute, that is to say that I dislike the termination '"ville'' in this instance, though I admit that the first part of the name should stand. It is to be hoped that a compromise may bo effected, but we must approach Mr Courtney very carefully if we hope to come to an agreement. Perhaps a deputation may induce him to use another ending for the name. Of such endings several are known in our language, such as 'burgh," "bury" or "borough," "ton" and "by," all old Saxon or Scandinavian forirs. I am not a<quiinied wiih the Irish tongus and therefore sugaesfc '•Ballysole" with much diffidence, but I see less objection 10 "Solesby." A public whipping should be administered to those barbarians who made up the name "Tattonville," which might well have been left as " Tatton.'" It is to be hoped tlafcoHier t -vva makers will think carefully and avoid the use of ugly hybrid names — I aai, etc., F. W. Richmond.
