Lawn Tennis Notes.

(BY "DEMON.") Players in the Championship Meet ing who have returned to town an superlative in praise of the Waverlej courts, and seem to Have "put in i tremendously good time,." to quot< one of themMiss Powdrell whose win in th< .Ladies' Championship Singles wai 'anticipated, and was a most populaj one, showed splendid form. In th< il'nal she beat Mrs Payne 12-1. Miss Powdrell is a pretty player and f coining one of the first grade by al accounts. Tuke's failure to carry off the Men's Championship Singles was a flukt and a bit of hard luck. "He beat Wallace in the first round" 6-4, 6-4 ; beat Dickie, second round, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, yet Nicholson beat him in the tir.al 6-4, , love-6, 6-3. He is undoubtedly a better player than Nicholson, but he came to the x combat fresh from other games and had not had time to recover from his- fatigue. In the Ladies' Championship Doubles Miss Cave and Mrs Payne beat Miss FowdrelJ and Mrs Pearce 13-11 after a closely contested and very exciting set. In the Town Club's Walker Tournament Miss Walker and Miss Hawken en Monday afternoon played off the first division final with Miss Standish and Miss MacDiarmid, winning 35-28*. The games were even at 26, the* losers having sometimes been a game or txvo ahead, but from 26 on the winners forged ahead, the very steady, play of Miss Walker and the hard ' hitting of Miss Hawken being too good a combination for their opPiononts, who however played a plucky game. ' ' , Miss Walke rand Miss Hawken now play off with Mrs Rollo and Miss Berry, the game to be 50 points, the latter to receive 10 points. Should the game run 49 all, 2 points over will be played. * ' Mr' Strouts informs me that a Wayerley team of six men and, 4 ladiis will probably visit the Town Club' on the 6th February. It is alvso possible that a Patea team will come up about March 3rd.
