The balance-sheet of the South British (nsurance Company for the year ended Ingust 31st shows a credit balance in the working account of L 33,373 10s sd. After adding LSODO to ihereiasttraaQe., fond, L 20,000 is addedj to the reserve fond, and the directors recommend a payment of a dividend for the second half year at the rate of 2s 6d per share* THE EMBARGO ON AUSTRALIAN GRAPES. At a meeting of ' Auckland Fruit Growers Union the following resolution was adopted :— " This meeting of fruit /rowers strongly approve of iho restriotiori prohibiting the importation of Aua tralian grapes, and asks the Government ho rigidly continue the same in view of | the agitation now being got up in Sydney to have the reatrictibn removed." It was ilso resolved that " seeing that a large quantity of nursery stock has been imported during the past season this meeting of fruit growers wishes to impress upon the Department of Agriculture the necessity of continuing the most stringent .md effective measures possible to prevent J.be introduction into the colony of ili fruit pest 9 inimical to New Zealand fruit, .rowers." AN' ARREST AT WANGANUI. Wanga tji, September 28. A smart arrest was ma^e by Detective Bishop last evening of a man named Sydney linnter, who was " wanted " on a charge of stealing £80 from Alexander Peoples' at lTans»ia on Thursday. The local police were informed at 9 o'clock lust evening that Hunter had entrained a horse and come to Wangnnui. An im mediate search -was made, and twenty iiinutcs after the detective was infor.ued that Hunter had juatleft the stables. He ran down the street and overtook Hunter, who was just about to cross the bridge, grabbing ihn reins of the horse while cantering. A struggle ensued, but Hunter was overpowered. '- -n being searched £50 was found on him. He had bought a horse, saddle, bridle, and cover with part of the stolen money. He was brought op at the Police Court this morning and remanded to Hawera. Hawera, September 28. Alexander Peebles, the man from whom £S0 is alleged to have been stolen by Hunter who was arrested in Wanganui, was plaintiff in an action for damages ag linsfc the Normanby Athletic Club a1 the last sitting of the District Court. The £80 represented the amount oi damages which had been handed ovei *to him by his solicitor on the day of the theft. THE FIRE ON THE ?APANUI. "Welmngtov, September 28. Cunninghai sued E. A. Cogan, claiming £53 10c Plaintiff brought through a broker share
in the Yjccent Company, of 'which de fendant "is Secretary. He received transfer, which he lodged at defendant' office. Ihe shares, it appeared, belong to the wife of a clerk in defendant' office. Instead of the transfer bein p.issed it was presumably destroyed b the clerk, whose wife disposed of th shares again.
