Received April 3, 9.47 a.m. Sydnky, April 3.— The New Zealand Federal Commission, on a visit to Tasmania, was welcomed by the Colonial Secretary. Auong the witnesses examined were Messrs Lewis, Premier, Bird, Colonial Treasurer, Justice Clarke, Henry Dobson, Burgess, Sir E. C. N. Braddon, and Johnston, Government Statistician, whose evidence was valuable as showing the financial difficulties in which a State will become involved through the loss of control of Customs and Excise duties. It wao admitted by all the witnesses that even to cover existing engagements Tasmania will have to levy a considerable amount of direct taxation, and all public works must come to a standstill unless the people are willing to submit to further levies in tLis direction.
