Commandant De la Rey ordered the execution as a revenge for the defeat at at Hartebeestefontein. Lord Methuen captured Commandant Peerson, who is largely responsible for the tragedy. The New York Sun has apologised for the garbled accounts published by itsomo time ago of letters written by Lieutenant Morrison, of the Canadian Contingent, describing the British atrocities in South Africa.
