In 1854 lie served in Bulgiria. lie was Secretary t) r'lo Karl of Elgin's special mission to China in 1857, and again in 1860. During the war with Cnina he was takan prisoner and subjected to much cruelty. Afterwards he became private Secretary to Sir George Grey when Sir George held the portfolio of Home Secretary in 1859. In 1883 ho was appointed Governor of tho Islo of Man. From 1884 to 1839 ha was Governor of Victoria, where he was very popular, afterwards succeeding Sir ITprcules Robinson as Governor of Cape Colony], Wkli ixgtox, Juno 27. — James Donnelly, for many years sergeant of police in New Zealand, and formerly connected with lUtistcourt, Victorii, died this morning, aged about 74. Deceased retired from the police some ten years ago, and has since held the position of Inspector of Weights and Measures.
