Wellington, September 11. """ Tho Cabinot has decided to alloir it to be optional with Volunteer Corp9 whether they retain the present uniform, or adopt the Kharkeo dress. There is much discontent at the prospect of having to adopt new uniform b, and as the Premier found that in England they have what 13 known as a dress service uniform, varying in different companies, tho Government has decided to amend the regulations accordingly.

MIDLAND RAILWAY WORKS.

Work on^the Midland Railway ia being actively carried on to the foot of the Otira Gorge. Some 200 men are engaged, and four miles are complete out of 14 between Jackson's and that point, and it is expected the line will be finished to tho accommodation house in Otira in 18-inonths, Platelaying will be started at once to enable a locomotiva to bring up stone for th 3 embankments at Riverside. None of the blocks will ba less than three tons. At the Nelson end the formation is complete to Norris's Gully, and the mils will be laid immediately to enable the lino to be ready for wool in December.

MEMORIAL TO LATE TALLIS TRIMNELL.

The movement to erect a memorial to the late Tallis Trimnell met with somuch success that £60 or £70 wa» subscribed at once in the room, and a committee was appointed with power to add to their number from other parts of New Zealand, as it was considered tho memorial should be of a colonial not & parochial character.

DISBANDMENT OF THE CONTINGENT.

The contingent is now disbanded, and the arms and accoutrements were returned to the store yesterday. Tlie Government, however, has issued an order that they should bo handed back to tha men and become their own property in recognition of their services. Colonel Pitt has received a formal lett-i- of thanks to the contingent from the Government.

RAILWAY CLASSIFICATION.

_The railway classification list is now being printed and will probably be ready for distribution at the end of the month. The list will show tbe positioa of members as on Ist April last, and any appeal must be lodged within a month. APPLICATION FOR INCREASED

SUGAR DUTY.

The Colonial Sugar Company has applied to the Government to impose an extra duty of £2 per ton on beet sugar on the ground that it interferes with the refining industry.

COOKERY W SCHOOLS.

The Women's Franchise League has asked the Government to increase the capitation grant to Education Boards to enable cooking to be taught in Bchfcols.

FEILDING SHOOTING CASE.

After a long retirement the jury in Looneys' case found them guilty of shooting without intent. Mr Wilfordi raised tho poiut that the verdict disclosod no offence under the criminal code, and with the consent of His Honor the point was reserved for the Court of Appeal. Bail was allowed in £50 each and two £.25 sureties. FLOURISHING CO-OPERATIVE.

The balance-sheet of the South Canterbury Farmers' Co-operative Association shows a net profit for tho year of £7,917.
