Sydney, September 9. — Sir George Turner's speech was the one discordant note in yesterday's debate. He said he would like to see New South Wales adopt a Protectionist tariff before federation was consummated. He seems to be afraid New South Wales importers will import larger quantities of goods and afterwards distribute them throughout the colonies when Intercolonial Freetrade came in ; but he overlooked the fact that importers of other colonies could similarly import and store goods at Sydney until Federation was brought about. Oilo of the Adelaide delegates characterised the speech as placing the hands of the Nemesis of Federation on every possible argument that could be adduced by the worst wrecker of Federation.
