Champion only polled 146 votes, and Upnt (formerly speaker of tho Assembly) 49. The latter had to forfeit his deposit. At the Criminal Court Rappiporfc and Baxter were charged with conspiracy to defeat the ends of justice. Mr and Mrs Boulter, the principal witnesses, refused to give evidence on the ground that it might be used against them, and Brown, having no further witnesses, the Judge directed the jury to acquit the accused as there was no evidence on which to convict. The defendants were accordingly discharged. Melbourne, May 28. For the first four months of the year the excess of exports over ■ -imports amounts to £1,256,000, as compared with £1,404,000 for the same- period laat year. Stdney, May 27.
