HURFORD ROAD.

[FBOM OUB OWN OORREBPONnENT.I This neighbourhood was enliveaed <>i Thursday evening, November 28th, lv an entertainment and dance got up bj 4he district for Uip purpose of raisins tfunds to buy prizes for the sctoo children. The chair was taken by Mi Adlam, chairman of the School Committee who explained tno object of tho entertainment, and the useful purposes prizes served when given to children, causing them to attend school more regularly and give more diligence to their lessons, fie 'also explained that unless parents strove to sond their children to school ffegalarly, they must not complain about the teacher as tbe children could not be tenght if they did not attend. He also pointed out that parents were ljable to be summoned, and fined two shillings pei week, for every child who does not attend at least sis times or six half days perweok, and that tho Committee did not do their duty according to the Act if they did not do this ; but he could not see how they could do it in tho country, and so it was not done, but ho hoped parents would do their best to send their children as regularly as they possibly could. The entertainment then commenced, and our amateur 'performers did very weljj every one striving to please the audience, and I think the teachers, children, and adults succeeded. At the end of the entertainment the Chairman thanked them all, and the teacher and children sang " God save the Queen." The room was then cleared, and dancing commenced, Mr Greenhill making a very good M.C. The music was supplied Toluntarily by the ladies, assisted by Messrs A'dlam, Harrison, and Aldridge, and a very pleasant evening was spent. Two ladies who generally take an energetic part in these gatherings, I am sorry to say weie absent ; Mrs Dawes, who met with an accident going home from the last entertainment, and Mrs Busby, \?ho was unavoidably absent. These social re-unions bring young and old to gether, and it is the only thing for us in the country to do for recreation. I bear we are to have two or three weddings up this way before long. The more the merrier.
