HOSPITAL AND CHARITBLE AID BOARD.

The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board raet in Wednuad&y. Present . — MesFiM J. Bellriuger (chairman), Peters, Corkill, Haworth, Adlam,' and Monkhouso. When tho minutes wero read Mr Monkhouse, of Stratford, stated that Pictou, who had been requested to come to Now Plymouth refuge, had signified his willingness to accede to the Board's request, but ho desired a few days to ariange his affairs at Stratford. A discussion ensued on the question of a piano having been taken to the Hawera Hospital without the Board knowing the instrument was thore. The Secretary explained that as far as he knew the piano was takan to the institution on hire for the benefit of a patient, and when it was there a prominent resident had started a movement to keep it there, and started a subscription for tfee purpose. This was the money that was forwarded at last meeting for the purchase of an instrument. —Mi Corkill thought the whole thing was irregular, in that the Board had not been notified that the instrument was to be taken to the Hospital. — Mr Adlam also referred to the matter. The Chairman said that no doubt the matter should have, been made known to the Board. Mr Haworth said if the arrangement had been carried out by the Hawera Committee it appeared to him 83 regular. Mr Corkill — Who keeps the minutes of the Hawera House Committee ? Mr Peters — Mr Major keeps them. Tha mattei then dropped. The Chairman informed the meeting that a return had been laid on the table giving details of the cost of the dam at Hawera, but 113 it was not complete in every respect ho asked the meeting to hold it ovor for the time being. The meeting agreed. A settler at Tariki wrote, stating that he had married a lady in receipt of aid, and asking that her children bo held in readiness to forward to their new home. — The Chairman said the children had been sent to their new home. Dr. McGregor wrote, stating that tho Department could not provide cell accommodation for lunatics awaiting removal to the asylums. — The Chairman said it meant that the Board would have to provide the necessary accommodation for lunatics aud drunks. Miss Buisson, of Auckland, wrote, asking for an appointment as a probationer nurse in tho Hospital. — Tho 80.-ird decided that they had applicants in tho district to fill the vacancies as probationer. The Board decided that at present they had no occasion to move in tho matter of a charitablo aid case at Oakura. Mr Monkhouae asked for information why a man suffering , from injuries, although drunk, should have been refused admission to the hospital. Ho took it that an injured man should be admitted to the institution. — The Chairman said that as far as he knew no refusal of admission was made. Tho 'man was in a drunken state when picked up on Saturday night, and the doctor considered that he was not in a fit 3tate to bo taken to tho institution. If the police had taken the Maori to tho hospital straight ,away tho Maori would have boen admitted aa an accident case. Mr Corkill explained the whole circumstances of the case, and said that tho doctor was willing to admit the Maori next morning when he was iv a better state than he was on the previous night. Mr Peters said that the whwle matter showed the necessity for a proper coll for such patients. Mr Monkhoube said he had brought the matter forward to show tbatpoople, when injured in drunken state could get admission, as a contrary idea had got abroad. He moved, that the House Committee ascertain the cost of a proper cell for violent cases. — Carried. The House Committee's recommendations for the admission and treatment of private patients in the Hospital were carried. Tho Railway Department wrote stating that a letter from the Board, asking for information as po accident stretchers, and the mode of conveyance thereof on lines in other districts, would receive attention. Several minor matters were attended to.
