She struck and cipsized daring a storm, and throe of the crew were drowred. The survivors escaped iv the boats. They were only partially clothed, and had veiy little food After a voyage of 75 miles, during which they suffered great hardships, they landed and began a drer -y march of nearly 100 miles to a native settlement, where they were inhospitably treated, and started back again for the co ist. On arrival they communicated with the Portuguese Governor of Delagoa, who sent a steamer to their rescue. Meantime volunteer crews from the steamers Oscar 11. and Olive Branch, lying at Delagoa, started in boats to the riscue of the sufferers. After an exciting voyage up the river, and a long tramp through unkown country, during which they were fired on several times, they l-ouched the settlement where it was supposed the castaways were located, and found they had left for the coast. The rescuers were almost naked and worn out for want of food. They had to march 95 miles back to the boats through rou^h aud swatny country, and were continually persecuted by natives. Their sufferings were so severe that all but two gave up. The latter reached Delagoa, whence assistance was sent to their companions who were brought safely to the coast.
