At a public meeting at West dive it was resolved to forward a petition to the Government asking them to purchase for settlement the Whakatane estate, owned by Mr R. P. 'Williams, containing 732 acres.

DROWNED WHILE BATHING.

A young man named J. Laurie was drowned in the river near Hastings yesterday. He was bathing, and unable to swim.
