WAITARA.

[from our own .correspondent.] April 23. — The s,s. Kanieri discharged on Saturday about 90 tons of general and other cargo, and left again for Onehunga the following tide. The schooner Zior arrived at the wharf on Monday evening with a cargo of flour, potatoes, &c. The officers of tho Wesleyan Church are endeavouring to meet the spiritual want of thifi district. The newly-ap-pointed minister to Inglewood preached at Waitara on Sunday morning, and from what I hear, if the sermon delivered on that occasion is a fair specimen of what the Inglewood friends will get, they will have good cause to be well satisfied with the appointment of Mr Dawson to that part of the district. Tho annual meeting of hr > iseholders was held in tho Waitara School on Monday night. The attendant was not large. Mr Pearce was requos;ed to take the chair, and read the report, which showed that fifteen meetings had been held during the year by the committee, at which nearly all the meiubsra were present. It also showed that iho school had maintained its efficiency during tho year, as shown by the inspect t-r's report of the annual examination, in the largo number of passes by the scholars ; also that one pupil had sucooeded in obtaining a scholarship. Tho report stated that the number on the rolls on March 3lst was 16S, and the average attendance 128, only three below the required number to entitle tho school to another teacher. The committee wished to impress on parents the necessity for sending their children to school as regularly as possible, so that a good result might be obtained, and also spare the future committee the trouble of using extreme measures to enforce the compulsory clauses of the Aot, whioh reoently came into force, oopies of which have .been circulated among tha ' scholars. The balance on hand on April Ist was £5. Mr Hoby moved the adoption of the report. Seconded by Mr Nichols, and carried. Mr Nichols moved that a hearty vote of thank •> be passed to Mr Pearoe for the satisfactory manner in which he has performed his duties as ohairman and secretary during the year, which was seconded, and carried unanimously. Mr Halloran proposed, and Air G. V. Tate j seconded, That the new committee be | Messrs Pearce, McKoy, Nichols, Wilson, Elliot, Brabant, and Hoby. There being no others nominated, the above gsntle men wero declared duly elected. Mr Hoby brought forward a complaint about quarter money being demanded, and wanted to know by whose authority the levy was made on tho scholars. Tho chairman read rule 70 of the Board's regulations bearing on the Bubjeot, when, after a long discussion, it was resolved that the chairman write to the Education Board to inquire whether tho charge of 6d per quarter for stationery is recoverablo at Jaw, or whether the committee has power to pay a reasonable Mim out of tbo capitation grant for that purpose Tho new committee then mot, and roelected Mr Pearoe as chairman for the ensuing year.
