TASMANIA^ LOAN. There is a good demand for Tasmanian loan, which is now quoted at about 2^ per cent premium. CAPTAIN DUFUS APPEAL REFUSED. Paius, January 2. The appeal of Captain Dufiis against his sentence has been dismissed. A HORRIBLE TRAGEDY. Three men and one womau were found nairdered under a staircase in Roubaix. the bodies having been terribly mutilated with a hatchet. The body of a man was discovered hanging higher up the staircase, and the police believe he was the perpetrator oE the crime and that he afterwards committed suicide. CZAR'S AMNESTY. St. Pktehbborg, January 2. The Czar's amnesty lightened and commuted ihe sentence of 20,000 prisoners. In many placß3 the prisoners, when released, had' to faco starvation, and, in order to bo returned to prison, committed outrages, and were condemned t~> serve the unexpired portions of theii sentences. ARCHBISHOP OF ADELAIDE. ' Rome, January 2. The Pope has appointed Bishop Johr. o'Ro.illy, of Port. Augusta, to succeed the late Dr Reynolds as Archbishop ol Adelaide.
POLICE EXPOSURES. New York, January 2. Byrnes, Chief of the New York Police has resigned, owing to the exposures oi the Committee of Enquiry. FINANCIAL CONDITION OP NEW FOUNDLAND. Ottawa, January 2. At a great meeting held at St. John's Newfoundland, it was decided to petitipt the Imperial Government for an applica tion of a Royal Commission to enquirt into the affairs of the colony, and en deavor to ascertain the real nanse of th< present financial and commercial crisis. FUNERAL OF LATE PREMIER. The late Sir J. S. D. Thompson Premier of Canada, whose body was brought from h ngland on board H.M.M Blonhcim. was buried on New Year': Day at Halifax, the obsequies being th« occasion of a most impressive scene.
