Melbourne, January 3. ' The report of the liquidator oa the Premier Permanent Building Societj shows the assets to be realised amount ! to £878,000, that the amount owing to the secured creditors and depositors represent £530.000 ; if £400,000 of the assets he ultimately realised, which, however^ the liquidator considers very doubtfuij the result to the depositors and creditors will bo the payment of a dividend of over nine shillings in the pound; if £300,000 bo realised, which is more than probable, tho result will bo a dividend of over five shillings; but how long it will take to realise the estate, or how much will be actually realised, it is impossible to say. Sydket, January 2. Arrived (to-night) : Tarawera, from Wellington, after a smart passage of 8 days 22 hour 3. The cutter, Emma Matilda, drifted ashoro on entering the Heads to-day. The two hands on board, including the master, Berndroff, took to tho boat, which capsized, and both were drowned. Sydney, January 3. Two friends namrd Curran and Murphy, during the New Year festivities nfc 'lemora, quarrelled, and subsequently Murphy was found dead, having apparently been killed with a tomahawk. Hurran has been arre-ted on suspicion of bding the perpetrator of tho deed. In its review of the past year, from a financial standpoint, the Daily 'telegraph says " that, naturally, countries possessing bodies of legislators inexperienced ;n; n financial matters, and with large Democratic and oven Socialistic elements in their midst, in so depressed a year could hardly fail to bring forth extensive efforts at experimental legislation. Such efforts happily had not made much progress, except in New Zealand. Ihe lehijraph predicts that whon theehronicles of 1895 como to be written, it will bo found that tho year 1894 marked the extremity of the depression.
