SUDDEN DEATH OF HON. PATRICK DIGNAN, M.L.C.
EXPIRED ON BOARD TAKAPUNA
AT BREAKWATER. The Hon Patrick Dignan, M.L.C., of Auckland, who was returning home from the session at Wellington by the Takapuna, expired on board the steamer about 11.30 o'clock to-day (Saturday), while the boat was lying at tho wharf at the breakwater. The hon gentleman, who was about 80 years of age, appeared in his usual health when the steamer left Wellington on Friday night, and there were no premonitory symptoms that death was so near at hand. He got out of his bsrth this morning, and was sitting in a chair when he expired. Dr. Leatham was at once telephoned for, and on going out found that life was extinct, although the body was warm. Failure of the heart's action is supposed to be the cause of death. The deceased gentleman's son, Mr James Dignan, was on board the steamer. The body was taken on to Auckland.
