AUSTRALIAN J.C. SPRING MEETING. Second Day. Sydney, September 18. —Magnificent weather prevailed for the second day's racing, and the attendance was large. The Governors of New South Wales and Victoria with their suites were present. The steeplechase was the greatest race of the day, and it is a long time sieco such a sight was witnessed at Randwick. Details :—: — Shorts; 5 furlongs. — Whakawatea, 1 ; Collarette, 2 ; Brolga, 3. Twenty-four started. Whakawatea, whose starting price was 20 to 1, kept in the front division to the distance, then came away and won easily. Time, Imin lisecs. Oaks. —Acmena (Ellis), 1 • Rogina (Nerricker), 2 ; Herondelle (Parker), 3. These were the only starters. Betting : 6 to 4 Acmena, 2 to 1 the other two. The favorite led all the way, and won as she liked. Time, 2min 51isec. Spring Maiden Stakes : 1£ miles.— The Possible, 1; Atlas, 2; Chester man, 3. Blarneys,tone and Inspiration also ran. Betting: 7 to 4 Chesterman, 5 to 2 The Possible, 3 to 1 Blarneystone and others. Inspiration made the running to half the distance, The Possible last. The latter then moved up, cut down his field in a masterly manner in the last two furlongs, and won confortably. There was a great fight for second place. Time, 2min 45i : sees. Metropolitan Stakes. — Projectile (Luckman), 1 ; Lady Trenton (Gough), 2 ; Paris (Fielder), 3. Following also ran: —Jeweller, Marvel, Pilot Boy, Oxide, Loyalty, Florrie, Eureka, Nightingale, Albercore, The Trier, Royal Rose, Babel, Pharamond, V«lney, Honour Bright, Glenullin, First Shot, and Qeotus. Betting : 5 to 1, Lady Trenton; 6 to 1, Paris; 8 to 1, Nightingale ; 10 to 1, Projectile ; 20 to 1, the others. An excellent start was effected with the aid of the machine. Paris was the first to pass the stand, with Babel and Royal Rose next. Babel quickly displaced the leader, and showed the way to the six furlong post with Pilot Boy, Albercorp, and Paris in attendance. At the sheds, Paris moved up on the outside, lying* about third, and on entering the straight Lady Trenton worked up towards the front. Projectile, however, came with a splendid rush at the distance, and passing the leaders, won easily, First Shot fourth, Babel next. Steeplechase. —Mutiny, list lib, 1; Helios, 12st 91b, 2; Sneaker, lOst, 3. Fourteen started. Betting : 4 to 1 Prodigal, 7 to 1 Ontario, and 10 to 1 others. From a good start, Mutiny alternately led with Castlebar. Waterbury refused early in the race, and Tatta in the last round. At the sheds Outrea, Sneaker, and Helois closed on Mutiny, who had attained a decided lead, and a desperate race home followed. Tho placed horses took the last jump together, Helios looking like a winner, but Mutiny came gallantly on and won by a short head amid great cheering; Sneaker was half a length away. Time, smin. 44sec. Squattkrsl Handicap, lj miles. — Gingham, 1 ; Response, 2 ; KingOrry, 3. Eleven started. Won by half a head, after a good race home. Time, 2min. 10+ sec.
