OPUNAKE.

[I'KOM OUK OWN CORRESPONDENT.] May 30. — The concert and dance in aid of funds for the building of a supperrooni at the Opunake Town Hall, was held op the evening of the Queen's Birthday. Owing to the very inclement statß of the weather a very sparse audience greeted ' the parforniors. In spite of these dispiriting influences the items of the programme were very creditably rendered oi\ the whole. Programme :— Piauof orlc ■ duet, ' " Chilperic," Mrs Christie and Miss Tait ; song, " The Quoon's Letter, Mr Hutcheus ; soug. " Let me like a soldier Fall," Mi- Breach; duet, "Larboard. "Watch," Meiers Carter and Lloyd \ song, •' Down went McGinty," Mr .-Brenuari,; song, " Some [day," Miss Tait ; comic song, "Deary deary me," Mr Brame; duet, "No Sir," Mr Lloyd «nd Mrs C. Pennington ; song, " Vagabond," Mi' E. C. Rakes. The best song o.f the evening was undoubtedly that of Mr Breach, who was in splendid , voice. Mi* Hutchens sang well, and showed that he was possessed of a good high baritone voice. I must not omit to mention Mr J. Carter in hia maiden effort. This gentleman possesses ' a splendid range of voice, and with a little cultivation has every promise of becoming a good' singer. A parishioners' meeting of the Churob of England congregation was held in the schoolroom here on the evening of Friday, May 11th, when the Sev. J. W. Chapman wan voted to the chair. There were also present — Messrs H. Newman, E. C. Middleton, H. Middleton, E. Beckway, F. Des Forges, King, Eason, Scott, and E. C. Raikes. Interim report was read by the Secretary. The Chairman, in his opening remarks, informed the parishioners thatthe Socioty for Promoting Christian Knowledge would no doubt-grant a. subsidy, if it were applied for, towards the building fund. After considerable information had been given in reference to the buildiug of churches at Jdauaia, and Otakeho, it was resolved, '' Thai plans and estimatos for the erection of tho pro- 1 posed Church of England bo obtained I from the Diocesan Architect at Wellington, with an increased width! in relation to the church at Manaia of two feet, and length in proportion." The balance from building fund (£127 Is Bd} was directed to be placed on, §xe4 deposit fcxr s\x mpntb.s. A hearty vqte o| thanks was accorded* the ladies who took suoh an. active part' in preparing for and generally working the late bazaar; and the meeting closed with a. vpto of thanks to the chair.
