EGMONT VILLAGE.

[fb m odr own correspondent.] March 13. — The annual sports and picnic was held here on March Bth, in a paddock kindly put at the disposal of the Committee by Mr J. Swan, of Egmont Road. The weather was all that could be desired, and a large gathering consequently took place. The following was the programme provided by the Committee :—: — 440 Yards Handicap.— J. McGee, 30yds, 1 ; Houlahan, scr., 2. Seven started. 220 Yards Handicap — Houlahan, scr., 1 ; Wm. Batten, 10yds, 2. Six started. 100 Yards Handicap. — A, Marsh, Byds, 1 ; — Finnimore, sjds, 2. Eleven started. Three-legged Race, 75yds.— S. Englefield & Co., 1 ; W. Batten & Co., 2. Boys Race, over ten years, 100 yds. — O. Peters, 1 ; P. Marsh, 2. Girls Race, over ten years, 100 Yards — Elsie Price, 1 ; J. Schicker, 2. Boys' Race, under 10 years — G. Peters, I ; H. Bocock, 2. Girls' Race, under 10 years. — E. Gibson, 1 ; N. Gibson, 2. Boys' Race, non-winners. — W. Olson, 1 ; — Bocock, 2. Girls Race, non-winners — Iris Gibson, 1 ; A. Chard, 2. Boys' Race, all-winners. — P. Marsh, 1 ; H. Bocock, 2. Girls Race, all-winners. — Elsie Price, 1 ; T. Gibson, 2. The game " softly with a brickbat hit him on the cocoanut," caused a lot of amusement to the children. After the races tea was served in the school ; 134 sat down, of whom 60 were children belonging to the school, and, therefore, had their tea free. After tea several pounds of lollies and nuts were scrambled for, and Mr J. McGee brought a large kit of apples, which he distributed among the children ; very kind of him, say I. A ball was held in the Egmont Village Hall. Between 30 and 40 couples took part in the light fantastic, and a more enjoyable evening has not been spent in Egmont Village, was the verdict of all. The tea was provided by Mr Callaghan, of Inglewood. The thanks of the Committee are due to the ladies who waited at table in the afternoon, as well as at supper later on. Mr D. Alexander acted as bandicapper for the Committee, and gave. general satisfaction. Iv fact everyone tried their utmost to make the affair a success. The next entertainment and dance will take place at the Hall on March l'Jth.
