TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL. THIS DAY.

The monthly meeting of the council was held in the new offices, next the New Plymouth Club rooms, on Monday. Present. — Messrs Bewley (chaiman), Peters, Horrocks, Okey, Adlam, McCullum, Tate, Lepper, and McGloin. Acknowledged.— Mr C. W. Govett, solicitor for Mr McCullum, wrote stating that his client's claim was not abandoned, but that he was waiting for the result of the appeal in the case Tarry v. the Council, some points in which resembled their case. The letter -will be acknowledged. Stone Required. — Mr S. Hill, clerk of Egmont Road Board, wrote asking the Council to allow ihem metal from the Waiwakaiho to metal the Smart Road. — A discussion arose as to whether the Council could spare the metal. — The matter was left in the hands of the two members of the Waitara Riding. Advertising. — A letter was received from the News Company ofHeriug to do the Council's advertising for Is 6d per inch, on the understanding that they got the printing required by the Council. A letter was received from Mr H. Weston, proprietor of the lleuald, stating he would insert advertisements in Heisai.d and Buuor.T for 2s per inch. — Mi- McGuux said that it seemed to him that they would have to accept the News offer. — The Chai K.MAX said that there was a condition of getting the printing in the News offer. — Mr Pet nits pointed out that the papers should be requested not " to spread out" the adveitisements. — Mr Adlam" suggested that tenders be called for. — Sir Mc-Cam.um moved, that advertisements be put tin both papers, and that tenders be called for general printing. — The Ci.i:kk said that it was not "worth while to call for tenders for printing, as they only wanted vouchers, etc., printed. — The Chairman remarked that it came to £80 or £'J0 last year. — Mr McCulmjm's motion was not seconded. — Mr HounocKS moved, that the Council will advertise in both papers if the advertisements are put in at Is 6d per inch. — Seconded by Mr Oki:y. — Mr McGtjllu.m moved as an amendment, that the Council call for tenders for advertising and printing — Seconded by Mr Lki'pek — The amend ment was carried, and the original motion lost. Waiongona Bridge. — Mr T. Clere wrote stating that at the request of Mr G. V. Tate, he had inspected the Waiongona bridge, and recommended repairs to a pier at a cost of £12, and also expenditure of between £4 and £5 to divert channel water from pier. — The Chairman said the matter couid be deferred, as it might be necessary to appoint engineers at this meeting to report on necessary work. Contractor s Account. — Mr J. McDonald wrote hoping the Council would paj' him the balance owing on his contract that had been completed. — The matter was deferred till the passing of the accounts. — The Chairman siid that in future it was to be hoped the Council would not let contracts unless they were able to pay for them. Overvalued. — Messrs R. J. Swan and Cheyne wrote stating that they were overvalued for sec 12, block 7, Huiroa, the proper value being not £GSB but £478 175. Owing to a mistake in value they had been paj'ing more rates than they should have paid, and they therefore asked for refund, and applied that mistake of value be set right. — The Clerk stated that he had got the value from the Land Office, and he could not say how the mistake was made. — The matter was left to the clerk to rectify. Omata Tollgate. — Mr C. Muller wrote with reference to his tender for the Omata tollgate. — The matter was deferred until after lunch. Temporary Bridges. — Mr Fry wrote offering to erect temporary bridges at Heimama, Ching's Creek, and Opawa, if the Council would give him power to collect tolls in Riding till cost was paid ; also to keep bridges in repair in Parihaka Riding for 21 years if he were allowed to collect tolls for year. — The Chairman said that it was undesirable to let the bridges go out of their control, aud he thought the proposition should not be entertainsd. — It was decided not to entertain the proposal. Impounding. — A letter was received from the Parihaka Road Board with reference to appointing rangers to impound horses and cattle on the County roads in that Riding. — Mr Okey moved that the Parihaka Road Board be empowered to appoint rangers to impound off the County road in Parihaka Riding. — Seconded by Mr Pi:tkks. — Mr McGloix said that the rangers of the Road Board were Messrs McSweeney and Coffey. — Mr Adlam objected to MrCoffey having power, and gave an instance where Goft'ey had been a bit high-handed in impounding a certain horse. — Mr Adlam thought that they should appoint their own men to act as rangers. He moved as an amendment, that the overseers in each riding be empowered to act as rangers. — Seconded by Mr McCalixm. — After further discussion the amendment ■was withdrawn, and the original motion was put and carried.
