The engineer confirmed this statemont A tnidahipmite declared that Rear Admiral Mavkhain oidtrod tho telegraph port engine " full spe«d ttstorn." Captain Ac-land endorsed Rear-Admiral Markliam's reading of tl>o turning signal. Navigation Lieut. Barr, of tho Camper down, deposed that though the Admiral, Captain Johnalone, and himself were confident the execution order was impossible, Admiral Markham reunrked, ll We have got to do it, as Tryon means it;" at the same time piping the men to tho collision stations. Had (ho Camperdown used her screws to aid her helm from tho beginning she cou'd easily luvo turned in loss loan six hundred yards, but that would not have been performing tho evolution. Whoa the ships were end on, and turning towards each other, tho collision could liavo been averted if the Victoria or Caniperdown had reversed their helms.
