THE HIGHWAYMAN SCARE.
A FALSE REPORT. ON Thursday night an alarm was raised tlmt the redonbtablo highwayman was seen near Iho Hospital, and a number of persons, including Constable Grey, turned out to effect his capture. The Knight of the Road, howevor, cou'd not bo seen, and the report waa put down for what it waa woith, namely, that someone had conjured up the robber in hid imagination on seeing a horseman ride by. Two residents of the west end, it is reported, on hearing the report made a capture of a man who was taken by them to be the highwayman. Thoy got their man down on the road near the Hospital gate, and held him securely till they were informed that they had in :de a mistake, Ti e captured man was evidently under the impression that he too bad fallen among robbers, for he was terribly scared. When he arose from the ground ho piteoualy asked what he had done to merit such treatment, seeing he had only a three days' knowledge ot the place, and he desired to bo glnwn the road to Auckland so that ho could start at once overland.
