Melbourne, August 19. The Budget proposals arc meeting with very strong opposition, and tho Government are likely to have a hard fight for office. Mr Thomson has been elected for the Dundas seat in the Legislative Assembly, caused by tho doath of Mr Samuels. Mr Thomson was opposed by Labor representatives. The action brought against Sip Graham Berry for alleged illegally sitting in the Legislative Assembly has been struck out. Brisbane, August 19. Tho Budget shows a falling off of £201,000 of tho estimates, but the expenditure is also less than tie estimates. The total excess of expenditure over revenue is £151,000. Tho deficit at 'present is £1,171,000. It is piopo3ed ito reduce the members' honorarium to £150, inelusivo of succession duties : to impose a tax on the use of totalisators ; and to increase t\a Customs duties. The estimated surplus next year is £52,000. The new duties include 20s per ton on flour, and 4d per bushel on wheat. The Constitution Bill will bo withdrawn, and a new measure - providing for two provinces substituted.
