OSTRICH FARMING IN TARANAKI.
Mr J Wueeler, of Durham Road, exhibited this (Satuiday) morning, in Calgher'd stables, two young ostriches, which he purchased the other day at Mr L. D. Nathan's estate, near Auckland. Tho birds are five months old, and are about a third grown, as they will not be full grown till they are 18 months old. Mr Wheeler intends to run tho.pair, a cock and hon bird, on four acres of grouni on his farm, and this will form the nucleus of an ostrich farm Tho enclosure will only be protected by an ordinary fence, as tho bird* can be coniined in paddocks surrounded by fences only 2^ feet high. The pair will be plucked in about a fortnight's time. Mr Wheeler states that about sixteen were sold at the auction sale, and afterwards higher offers wt.ro made, but Mr Nathao refused them, as he intimated before the auction that thero would be no placing after the sale. Mr Wheeler himself was offered £5 advance on each of his birds, but he would not accept. The speed of the ostrich is phenomenal, as without any apparent effort they can keep up to the gallop of the best trained thoroughbred horse in Mr Nathan's pad ock. Wo wish Mr Wheeler success in his now venture.
