[PROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.] COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING. January- 30.— The Council held a special meeting, Messrs Marcbant (chairman), Read, Liardet, Youngman, Thompson, McGregor, ani Irvine present. Merging the Ngaire Road District. — A special order was made, to be confirmed at a meeting on February 27th, merging the Ngaire Road District in the County, and abolishing the Road Board. Town Levels. — A deputation of residents and property owners on the portion of the Mountain Road b3tween Fenton-str ot and East Road wa'ted on tin Board to support a petition, asking that the footpath as laid down should not be interfered with. The Chairman moved, and Mr Youngman seconded, " That a special order be made varying the permanent level of that portion of the . Mountain Road, which lies between tho point 2 chains north o£ centre of Fenton-street and Reganstreet in Stratford townßhip, f rom the level shown on the plan prepared by tho late Mr Climie, C.E., which has been adopted by the local bodies concerned, to that shown on the plan of Mr H. W. Climie, and that •the latter be declared to bo the permanent level of that portion of the Mountain Road." —The following amendment was moved by Mr Irvine and seconded by Mr Thompson, " That the permanent levels as adopted by the local bodies and confirmed by this Council be carried out." — The amendment was put and lost. The resolution was then put and lost.— On the motion of Mr Liardet, seconded by Mr Reid, the Clerk wan instructed to get the solicitor's opinion as to the liability of the Council to compensate property-owners if tho present footway north of the Patea River and wost of tho Mountain Road bo lowered. East Ro'.id,— lt being reported that carters were removing the corduroy from its pos'tion, it was resolved to notify all persons so offending to reolace, or the Council would do so at their expense. — Tho Engineer was instructed to take means to protect the pack bridges from bush firos. Cardiff and Waingongoro Itoouts. — The Chairman stated that, as authorised, ho had a\ ranged with the H.\wera County for two days' use of their crusher for Btono for repairs to these roads. County Office. — A Committoe was appointed to deal with this matter Midhint. — A contract was let for filling a hole in the township. Bird Bond.— An offer from Mr Harm to repair tho " zigzag " was considered. Mr Harm was asked to put hie offer in writing. Gordon Road Loan. — The appointment of the Clerk as Returning Officor t.t tho poll was continued. Murphy & KerricJt's Claim.— The Committee reported on this matter. RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Monday, February I.— Before T. Perm, Esq., J.P., and S. H. James, Esj., J.P. W. Clarke v. F. Pepperell.— Claim, ss, on balance of account. Judgment for amount claimed, and costs 6a. W. Cartwright v. L. Ashwin.— • Claim, £2 10s, for board and lodging. Judgment for amount claimed, and costs 6s. C. Cooloy v. E. Molonoy— Mr T. C. Fookes for defendant. This wai a claim for £1 15s for illegally impounding plaintiff's cattle, After a lengthy hearing the Bench decided I hat the impounding »vas perfectly legal, but that the charge in one instance waa excessive, and ordered the defendant to refund tho sum of 13s and to pay 8s costs. Each party to pay their own witnesses and other costs. W. Strickland v. A. Wind.— Claim, £8 lls 6d, for board and lodging Mr T. C. Fookes for plaintiff. Judgment for amount claimed, costs of Court 10s, and solicitor's fee £1 Ib.
