The Pungarehu Racing Club held their first meeting on Monday, under rather favorable conditions with respect to tbfc weather. The course, which is situated just below tho Pungarehu Redoubt, will make a good one in time, but at present it is rather rough. Tho heavy rain that set in on Sunday, and continued at intervals on Monday morning, made parts of the ,coursowhero bad places had been filled in and the turf had been cut off rather heavy. The officers of tho Club worked most energetically in carrying out the meeting, especially the secretary, Mr Alford. Mr Adams (of the firm of Adams & Andrews) worked the totalisator, and put through the sum of £461 . The publican's booth was run by Mr Brown, of Rahotu; tho refresh inent booth by Mr Hickoy, of Puncarehu; and the games by Mr Des Forges, of Opunake. There was a good attendance of , the public, the number on the course being estimated at about 800. Speculation on the machine was not so very brisk. Tedd's stable wag again in evidence, carry ing off tlie two principal handicaps. There was no official timekeeper, but private watches timed the principal events. Wairongomai struck the next hurdle heavily, but recovered. Recruit led all the journey, and won by about four lengths from Security ; Wairongomai a fair third. A prbtost was laid by the rider of the second horse for a cross in the straight, The stewards considered the protest, and dismissed it. The pair hung together for most of the journey, Marangai coming in tho straight and winning easily. There were no investments on tho machine. Pukgarehu Cup, of £25. Tho quintette moved off together on tho fall of the flag. Scotia and Positive at once began to make the running, with Sirius last. This order was kept up for onco round, and then Cudd sot out to ' collar tho field with Sirius. The mare cut down tho others excepting Thunderbolt on tho last round, Poßitivoand Scotia having had enough. Coming down to the straight Sirius threw oft: Thuudorbolt, who was running gamoly, and took the lead, maintaining it to tho finish, nhd winning by three lengths from Thunderbolt. Delegate, under tho whip, came fast at the finish, and got on Thunderbolt's quarters. Totalisator, £113— 76 0n Sirius, 18 Thunderbolt, 10 Delegate, 6 Positive, 2 Scotia. Div, £1 6s. Nimrod went to the front on the fall of the flag, closely followed by the others. Nimrod led for fully a mile and a quarter, when The Orphan ran up to him, and the two raced togethor into the straight. The Orphan's condition told tha tale, for des pite Cudd's vigorous riding on Nimrod the mare beat his mount by half a length, with Rainbow a fair third, and the others out of it.
