FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
« ARRIVAL OF S.S. DUKE OF . WESTMINSTER. The New Zealand Shipping Co.'s direct steamer Duke of Westminster arrived from Auckland off the Waitata bar on Monday evening, for the purpose of loading frozen meat from the Egmont Freezing Works. This fine steamer, which i® nearly 4000 tons gross measurement, is four masted, and was built about nineyeais ago, at Barrow. She has capacity in her freezing chambers for 72,000 oarcasses of mutton, and at present she has a large cargo of meat on board, which she shipped at Napier and Auckland. The steamers' engines are 450 horse power,- and on her outward voyage they worked most satisfactorily.- The steamer is under the command of Captain J. S Cox, who has the following officers under him: — Chief officer, Mr E J. Clout; second officer, Mr W. R. Irvine ; third officer, Mr Herbert Brading; chief engineer, Mr J. Gilmour; doctor, Mr C. Scatchard. At Napier the steamer shipped 16,249 carcases of sheep, 2108 latnby, 188 quarters beef, besides wool, skins, flax, &c. At Auckland the steamer also shipped a large cargo, ,of meat, kauri gum, wool, pearl shell, &c. This (Tuesday) morning ,the two punts went out of the Waitaraand began to tender the steamer. The weather is simply perfect to carry on the loading, and it is expected to put the full cargo on boa>-d (about 5000 carcases) to night. The s.s. Gairloch nails alongside the Dnko of Westminster to night, to tranship Captain Nearing and stevedores who came round in her from Auckland to stow the frozen cargo. She leaves Waitara for Blenheim.
