London, May 15. Ten thousand tiilors in the city threaten to strike ,'as a protest against the long hours they have to work, and the insanitary state of the workshops. VICTORIAN LOAN. OUTRAGES AT CORFU. , Further outrages have taken place at Corfu, and in consequence the European Powers are urging other countries to earnestly intervene with a view to suppressing the disorder. The British and French squadrons have arrived at Corfu. MANIPUR REVOLT. Despatches have been received respecting the Manipur revolt, which show that Mr Quinton intended arresting the chief Senapulty "in open at Durbar and leave the Regent ou the throne. Many newspapers denounce the action as treacherous, and blame Mr Quinton and the Marquis of Lansdowne for it. The papers also condemn the inadequate forces sent to Manipur. GAS WORKERS STRIKE. Brussels, May 15. The city is threatened to be left in darkness owing to a strike of gas stokers. RESIGNATION OF PORTUGUESE MINISTRY. . Lisbon, May 16. The Portuguese Ministry has resigned. Rome, May 15. , In an encyclical letter the Pope maintains that the church is the principal solvent of the labor question, and the State must give aid by benefitting the workers. His Holiness contends that the State ought to assist the Trade Unionism animated- by- a Christian spirit. NAVAL ENGAGEMENTS EXPECTED. 1 New York, May 15. Intelligence has reached here that the rebel gunboat Esmeralda is awaiting the Chilian steamer Itata, at Acapulco, a port in Mexico, and that the United States cruiser Charleston, is hourly expected to put in an appearance. The Russian Government covertly continues the oppression to which the' Jews are subjected, and 22,000 have been expelled from Moscow to the southern and western districts ; 20,000 others will be" sent away next month. The leaders of the insurrection in Chili have communicated by cable with President Harrison, seeking to arrive at a friendly settlement of the Itala incident.
