SHIP ON FIRE I* SYDNEY HARBOR. | Sydney, January 14. A fire is now raging furiously in the four-masted ship Talavera (Captain Kobson), which arrived front London oh December. 31, after eightyrfive days' passage. The fire commenced under! the fore hatch, but owing to the dense smoke the firemen were unable to descend into the hold to grapple with the flames. The whole of the lower hold between the fore and main, hatches is burning. The vessel and ' remaining portion of the cargo are valued at £35,000, and is owned by Messrs John Hardie & Co., of Glasgow, and is an exceptionally fine specimen of marine architecture. Later. — The fire on board the Talavera has been extinguished." The Sydney portion of the cargo was discharged prior to the fire. The Newcastle consignment principally suffered. The fire is supposed to have originated in a shipment of wax matches. The flames burned fiercely in the lower and 'tween decks. The remaining portion of the cargo has been greatly damaged by ■water, but it is impossible to compute the exact amount at present.
