MB SMITH'S CANDIDATURE.
I) THE EDITOR.
Sin, — One of tho reasons urged against tho candidature of Mr E. M. Smith is that he is a working man, and that as such he will have no weight in the House. There is every probability that sevoral labour candidates will be returned at tho coming election, and the New Plymouth electorate (if Mr Smith is returned) will not be an exception. It is admitted by those who have heard them that Mr Smith is quite equal to several of the speakers in the last Parliament, and will, no doubt, have as much weight. Besides, he is the only one of the three nominated for Now Plymouth (so far as can be seen) who has no " axe to grind." The electors need not be led away by the idea that Mr Smith will not be as good as any of tho others nominated for the House, and as he possesses indomitable perseverance — which, if the past is any criterion, none of tho others possess — the district will havo no cause to regret placing Mr Smith at the head of tho poll. The Thames Advertiser, in an article on tho caudidature of Mr Smith, says "'' the Taranaki people will be very foolish if they do not return him." — I am, &c, An Elector.
