THE BAND RINK.
WELCOME DANCE TO MR , ' COURTNEY'S PARTY. Mr Courtney's party of settlers who arrived by the "Kaikoura" were present by invitation at the Volunteer Band' Rink on Tuesday night. There was a large attendance, the gallery and side seats being lined with spectators, and a large number of Tinkers occupied the floor. A polo- match was an exciting item in the programme. The sides were as follows : — Black and white — C. Churton, F. Moore, F. Newell, and D. Teed. Blues — F. Stohr, G. Norton, 6, Teed, and A. Rennelh The former won by 10 goals to 9 goals, after an exciting contest. The visitois ware afterwards entertained a,t a dance which followed the rink — the Volunteer Band kindly remaining behind and providing the music. After rapper his Worship the Mayor, who was present- at the request of the Committee*, said a few words of welcome and wished all of the new settlers a prosporous career. He warned them that they must not expect everything to run smooth at first, but speaking from b}B own experience he could assure' them that if they were prepared to turn their hand heartily to such employment as -could be had,' without stipulating solely for what they had been accustomed to, they would ultimately succeed, and have no reason to regret having made their home in this young and productive colony. A gentleman, on behalf of tho new arrival^, thanked the Mayor for his kind welcome ■ and for the hospitality which had been shown them. Mr Coartney also expressed hip thanks for the kind reception got up on 24 hours notice. ■ Mr Richard Cock joined with the Mayor in welcoming the new arrivals, and instanced cases of others who had come out through Mr Burton, with little or no means,and who had gone upon forest lands and/ made thenmelvs homes, and were now in very comfortable circumstances. Dancing was then resumed, and kept up till shortly after twelve.
EXPORTS FROM BREAKWATER. The exports from the breakwater for the four weeks ending August 16 Were :—: — Butter, 53,980 Jfoa ; flax, 330 bales ; sheepskins, 12 bundles ; cheese, 6 cases and 12 single ; honey, 28 packages ; fowls, 4 cases ; hams, 1 bag ; hair, 1 bag ;; tallowj ft casks ; 205 head cattle ; 771 sheep ; 2 horses ; 40 pigs ; 318 hides ; potatoes, 255 sacks ; rape seed, 45 sacks ; old iron, 23£ tons; pork-, 9 kegs j 10,000 feet timber; plants, 15 packages ; bacon, 10 cases; grass seed, 400 sacks; flour, 6 sacks ; sundries, 9 tons 84 feet, Totftlj 4t42.tQßp34fr?t, ' j
