FIRE IN POWDERHAM-STREET.
At 2 clock this (Wednesday) afternoon a fire was observed issuing from a chimney of a house at the corner of Silver and Powderbam-streeta occupied by Mr S. Howell, sen., and owned by Mrs Moon. The fire came through the chimney, and caught some woodwork on the roof, but as the roof is of slate, tho fire did not make much progress. Several willing persons, including the Rev. H. H. Brown, Messrs. W. Christie, F. Newell, J. Guerin, and W. Guerin, sen., went to work, and by the means of buckets of water soon succeeded in extinguishing the flames.
The police are enquiring into a fire in town, and it is probable that an enquiry will bo held.
Mr W. F. Downes, the erstwhile popular manager of the Bank of New South Wales here, is now in town on a holiday. He returns to Wanganui on Friday.
The many friends of Mr C. Kelly, son of Mr T.Kelly of Bell Block, will be pleased to learn that he is third officer on the Eastern Cable Extension Co.'s steamer Sherard Osborne. The head-quarters are at Singapore. Capt. Hempton's oldest son is also an officer on this steamer.
Mr O'Hara Smith, the Government Auditor for this district, who has been laid up with a serious illness for some time, is, we are pleased to see, able to get about again, inasmuch as he is at present in town on a holiday.
