EDUCATION BOARD. THIS DAY.

The Educatiou Board met on Wednesday. Present; Miss Heywood, Mrs Richmond, Messrs T. Kelly (chairman), Teed, Faull, Olson, Adlam, Andrews, and Wade.

Illness. — The Inglewood Committee under date May 16 forwarded a notification that Mrs Dymond, of the Inglewood School, was ill, and that her daughter had taken her duties. — Dr. Gault's certificate was also received in which it was stated Mrs Dymond would be able to attend her duties in a fortnight.

Rahotu School Committee. — Mr G. W. Gane forwarded a petition from four resident householders of Rahotu District protesting against the election of the Rahotu School Committee on April 28, on the ground that Mr E. R. Morgan was allowed to be put on the Committee when he was a resident householder in the Oaonui School District, which was contrary to sec 58 of " The Education Act 1877." It was decided, "That the protest of certain householders in the Raholu School District, stating the election of Mr E. 11. Morgan as a member of the Rahotu School Committee is illegal, and, consequently, void, be forwarded to the Rahotu Committee, requesting them to report to the Board whether in their opinion the statements therein are correct." — Two letters from Mr Gane were read on the subject.

Koru. — A letter and medical certificate were received from the chairman of the Oakura Committee relative to Miss Young's leave of absence from her duties at Koru School. — Miss Young returned to her duties on May 19.

Teachers.— The Board decided, "That Bteps be taken to secure a teacher for the Kaimata Road School, and also for the Upper Carrington Road School, if the residents accept the conditions of the Board."

Koru Appointment. — It was resolved, " That the appointment of teacher to the Koru School be held over till the next meeting of the Board, and in the meantime that the Inspector be authorised to make temporary arrangements to fill the vacancy caused by Miss Young's resignation."

Rahotu, Appointment. — The Board decided the names of Mr Kenneth McDonald and Miss Emma Hawkes be forwarded to the Rahotu School Committee from which to select a teacher for the Rahotu School, and make a recommendation to the Board.

Drawing Expert. — The Board discussed the question of securing a drawing expert for instructing the teachers. — Mr Herzog's letter offering to instruct teachers in object drawing, and plain and solid geometry every Saturday from 11 to 1.30 p.m., for a quarterly fee of JEI2 12s was read. — The Chairman moved, " That the services of an expert in drawing be Becured by the Board for the three months ending August 31, at a fee not exceeding J512 12a per quarter, to enable teachers to attend Saturday classes free of cost for tuition, the teachers to pay their own travelling expenses." — Seconded by Mr Olsok. — On division the mover and seconder only voted for the resolution, and the rest of the Board against it.— The resolution was therefore lost.

Waitara. — F. Gilbert wrote stating that he was not prepared to take up the section at Waitara West on the terms he offered at last meeting.

Inspector's Memo. — The following resolutions were passed in connection with the Inspector's uieino.: — (1) That the Palmerston series of Vere Foster's copy books be struck out of the list of books to be used in the Board's schools, and the Southern Cross copy books of tho Browne seaies be substituted ; (2) that Nelson's New Royal Reader No. 1 be substituted for the similar Reader of the same number now in use, and that the alteration be brought into operation on June 1, 1891 ; (3) that the third series of Nelson's Royal Reader be removed from the list of books which may be used in the Board's schools; (4) that pupil teachers be informed through the headmastors that the yearly examination will begin on Tuesday, July 1, at 9 a.m. at the Central School ; (o) That, the midwinter holidays begin on Monday June 30, and the aonools bo reopened on Monday July 14." Architect's Report. — The Architect reported that the work at Kaimata was proceeding satisfactorily ; and that the Wait ra fencing was completed, but had not yec been inspected. the present chimney removed to enable the Committee to fix the stove in the most convenient place, was agreed to. Accounts. — Accounts, amounting to £483 13s lid were passed for payment. The Board adjourned.
