BUSH FIRES.

THE GOVERNMENT AID. TilK Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr S. Weetman) received the following letter from the Under-Secretary of Crown Lands this (Saturday) morning:— "l am requested to transmit herewith copy of a memorandum from the Charitable Aid Department as to the distribution of relief to the sufferers by the recent bush fires, and to ask you to be good enough to carry out the wishes of the Department aa therein expressed. I have been desired to add to the remarks of Dr. McGregor a request that you will intimate to those persons who receive the assistance that tho Charitable Aid Department will insist on tho amounts nf the promissory notes being paid as btatcd in the memo." A copy of Dr. McGregor's memo to tho Under Secretary of Crown Lands was enclosed, and read : — "The Government have decided to grant £300 towardß the purchase of grass seed for persons whose pastures have Ktiffered from the recent bush tires ntTnranaki, and the money will be placed at the disposal of the Commissioner of Crown Lands whom Mr Hi«!op will be obliged by your instructing as folllows :—: — (1) That the grace seed be of the proper kind, and best quality ; (2) that help be confined to persons who will not accept charity — but are willing to repay tho amount of the loan without _ interest in three years or such broken periods within three yeara as they prefer, giving promif pory notes," Tlion followed forr tunic jr.btrucli&D cliuibch, tonliunintf inl'oimuiiyn pm $ $ jMjy*J» te * ,r« /Wrap* ,
