RELIEF FUND.

TO THE IDIIOI.. Sir, — No response, as far as I can learn, having been made to the sug-gpstion of forming a Dorcas Society or clotliing committee, may I ask space to urge the necessity of prompt action in the matter. A few persons who are aware of the pressing need of sonic of the families, who did not save a single change of underclothing, and therefore cannot yet wash the garments worn at the time of the fi e, have already ; been collecting either garments or material, appeals for which have been very kindly responded io by several of our townspeople. But it is very evident that this method cannot prove satisfactory to either donors or recipients. In the one case the duty of publicly acknowledging such gifts is rendered diilicult, and in the other proportionate distribution will be impossible, borne getting more and some less than their actual requirements. Therefore, in order to facilitate business, may I suggest to those who are willing to help during this week, to do a little sewing at their own homes, kindly send or leave their names at Sarnia House, when cut out garments would at once be sent out to them, and if just a few would join as a management committee, meeting wherever they consider it most convenient, I shall be glad to do my part. One such meeting would probably make this labour of love quite easy for all. But let it be impressed on all that it is preset action which will convey the greatest benefit to the settlers.

I have to gratefully acknowledge a donation of 30 yards of calico from Mr Morey, and of two boy's shirts from Mr Clarke, New Zealand Clothing Factory ; also of sundry articles of clothing from various persons who do not wish their names given, but who would like to know that a committee was promptly and fairly disposing of them.-- 1 am, &c,

M. COLLIS.
