Two Taranaki-bred horses have been winning hack races in the Wairarapa district. These are Lock, a colt by Flintlock — Camelia, and Locket, a filly by Flintlock — Mermaid. Einmett has been scratched for events at the local hack meeting on Boxing Day on_ account of his owner finding out that he is ineligible under the rules, a 9 he has won a race over the value of £30. At the Education Board meeting to-day (Wednesday), the following tenders were accepted : — Waitara school, enlargement, M. Jones, £193; additions to Inglewood school, W. Campbell, £50; Wortley Road school, lining, G. Turner, £9; additions to Midhirst residence, M. Jones, £46; Waiongona residence, M. Jones, £68; chimneys at Stratford and Egmont Village, H. Hooker, £22. A company in Amsterdam is working a new method of preserving milk by sterilising it by destroying the bacteria in it. In closed receptacles milk so treated will keep for upwards of four weeks, and in open vessels it remains sweet for four or five days. It is thus more fit for export than ordinary milk ; but as the price at which it is sold is one-fourth more than fresh-milk, there is no fear of our Dutch friends carrying out their old promise of flooding London with the fluid. Milk is so cheap here at wholesale prices that our farmers have no need to fear foreign competition. It is not cheap to consumers in the towns — at least good milk is not ; but farmers get only about sid to 6d a gallon net in the summer, and 7d to 8d in the winter.
