PRIVATE BILLS. THURSDAY, June 27.— The only private bills for to-day are— Mr Steward's Educational Franchise Bill, and Mr Hutchison's Criminal Evidence Bill, if the second readings are disposed of the Government will go on with tho Estimates this evening. THOSE TRVELLING EXPENSES. During the discussion last night Dr. Newman replied rather vigorously to Mr Saunders, and caused a good deal of merriment at the latter's expense by telling him th-it-schools in his (Mr Saunders') district would not be so badly off if members of tha Edncation Boards did not draw bo muoh in travelling expenses. THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT. With the existence of a surplus, and no proposal with lespect to a loan, litt'e inteiest is envinced in the Financial Statement, which the Premier delivered on Tuesday night. A member who takes considerable interest in financial questions has expressed the opinion that the statement is tne " baldeßtof the bald." A NEW PHRASE. Mr Harkness has invented &ne* term for the " small but substantial surplus. ' He called it in his speech an " equilibrium , on the right side." j A CHALLENGE. -Mr Lawry said in the House the other ni'bt that if the Premier would coma and stand for Auckland under tbe Hare 8> stem, he (Mi Lawry) will undertake to lick him into a cocked hat.
