EDUCATION BOARD.

Ths Education Board met on Wedaesday. Present : Miss Hey wood, Mrs Richmond, nnd Messrs Kelly (chairman), Bauchope, Fuull, Olson, Adlam, Syine, and Andrews.

Okato — Miss Eustace has been appointed pupil teacher at Oka to from June 20, as recommended by the Inspector. Lepperton."Th& Inspector recommended the appointment of Miss Buckle as pupil teacher at Lepperton, but pending the Committee's recommendation the matter was left in ahuyance.

New History Booh. — The Inspector reported in favor of the history book recommended at last meeting by the Taranaki Teachers' Institute.— The Board decided to postpone the matter till next meeting, when tbe Inspector will show them a copy of the history.

Warea Hesidence. — The tenders for building a residence at Warea were received, but no tender was accepted, pendincr. the settlement of the proposed school at Pungarehu. — The Inspector reported that 40 children would attend a school at or near Pungarehu, but some of the scholars would be withdrawn from Warea and Rahotu schools. He stated that the settlers could arrange about a cottage to meet present requirements, and the school could be conducted as a half time one ia conjunction with tbe Warea school, or assistance given to tbe settlers to establish a temporary charge pending further enquiry, — The Board decided "That in the opinion of the Board it is desirable to establish a half-time school at Pungarehu and Warea under the Warea teacher, nnd that the Inßpecto. be instructed to make arrangements with the respective Committees (Rahotu and Warea) to give effect to this, and to report to the Board at next meeting." — It was also decided " That the tender for the residence at Warea be not accepted for the preßont." Lower Kent Road.— lt was decided to only have one week's holiday at midwinter for this school, and thus allow the teacher fiv3 weeks at Christmas.

Shortening Lunch Hour. — The Board decided, on the application of the Egmont School Committee, to allow only half an hour for lunch for the schools in this district, and to dismiss the scholars at 2.30 p.m. during June, July, and August. Central School. — In connection with an application frojn the Town Committee, the Board decided that repairs of the Central SMioo! and residence and fencing must be provided out of the school capitation fund, as stated in a resolution of the Board on August 8, 1888.

Omata Teacher. — The Oakura Committee recommended Mr Richards aB teacher to the Omata School. — The Board received a letter from Mr Riohards, withdrawing his name, ag it had come to his knowledge that another candidate would be preferred by the majority of the parents of children attending the Omata School. — The Oakura Committee will be notified of Mr Richard's withdrawal, and will be asked to recommend another candidate.

Opunake Eepairs. — Tbe Opunake Committee offered to pay up to £5 for repairs to their school if the Board gave £5. — It was decided that the spouting at the Opunake school be repaired at a cost not to exceed £1, and that the Committee be informed with respect to other repairs that the Committee must make them out of the capitation fund at the proper time, and the Board will contribnte to the cost of sinking tbe well.

Oanui School. — Miss Malcolm was appointed teacher at the Oanui school as recommended by the Oanui Committee.

Upper Mangoreh — It was decided to take steps to procure a teacher for the Upper Mangorei school, in place of Miss Milcolai resigned.

Surrender of Section. — The seal of the B^ard will be affixed in the usual way to Catherine Burkes surrender of her loose of allotment 74, block 7, Waitara Survey District.

A Lease. — The seal of the Board will be affixed to Mr A. J. Honey field's lsase of allotment 109, block 7, Waitara.

Tarata School.— Messrs Standing and Priest applied for one month's extension of time from expiration of contract time for building the Tarata School, as they have been delayed in getting the materials •irted, — Deferred till tbe Board sees how they get on.

New School. — Sixteen settlers petitioned the Board to erect a school on tne site at the corner of Juaction and Kaimata Rnads, Huiroa. There are 42 children of school age in the district. — The petitioner* will be informed that their request will bo enquired into when the question of allocating the building fund for new schools will be considered when the grant has bean made.

Stratford, — Ihe resignation from August Ist of Miss Marie Johnson, pupil teacher at Stratford, was accepted, and the Inspector was instructed to report as to the appointment of Master Ivan Evans as recommended by the Committee. Waitara West School. — In connection with a letter from the Committee, the Board resolved to inform the Waitara Committee that the Board at present has no funds to make additions to the Waitara West School, but when the Boird hts had the present building grant allocation it will consider the question of increused accommodation

Warea School — The Board decided to grant the Wurea Committee's request to open their school at 10 o'clock, and have only half an hour for lunch during June, July, acri August.

Central School. — The Town Committee forwarded tho resolution asking the Board to reconsider the adjustment of appointment of the fern ile teachers at the Central Sclnol. — A committee consisting ot Mrs Richmond, Mr Bauchape and the chairman nas appointed to enquire into and report at next meeting of the Board on the question.

Architect's Report — The architect's report on works in hand, etc., was read. Accounts. — Accounts amounting to £684 15a 6 i were passed for payment. The Board a'ljouxaed.
