BANKRUPTCY COURT.

THIS DAY. Friday, October 21.— Before F. P. Corkill, Esq., Deputy Official Assignee. IN RE CHARLES COOMBER, OF NEW PLYMOUTH, LICENSED YICrOALLEIt. Charles Coomber, duly sworn, saith :—: — At the time of my bankruptcy I was licensee of the Red House Hotel, whero I bavo been since about 15th July last, when I vacated the Taranaki Hotel, of which I had been licensee for about ten yearß. When 1 moved into thb Red House I sold my interests in the Taranaki Hotel at a valuatiou, and I took over the Red House and contents on a similar valuation, the freehold being £2150, of which £1800 or thereabouts was on mortgage, owina; to Messrs. Sclanders & Co. and Mr. Paul respectively. The difference between my selling and buying valuation was £415, of which 1 received £15, and Grylls, the purchaser, became answerable to Mr. Paul for £403. At that time I had no knowledge that ] was insolvent, for I was doinar a good business, and had paid interest aod other disbursements for years past. I owed i!r. Paul about the same as Ido now — £250, in addition tc which he has guaranteed my account at the bank for £590 lib &i, which was a liability incuirrd ia rebuilding the Taranaki Hotel somyears ago. This makes my total indebtedness to him, unsecured, £843 3s 7J. I have no other books than those now in the Assignee's possession. I never kept a cashbook showing my takings. The ouly lauded property which I bad was the Red House Hotel, aud I also occupied a section in Gill-street, which Mrs. Batchelor allowed me to occupy as tenant at will on jurying the rates. 1 have six harrier dogs, one terrier, and one Gordon setter. Three harriers (a bitch and two pups) are in cure of Tom Colson, two other 3 are at the Red House Hotel, and there is one at William Allen's, iv Gill-street. There is a seventh at Waitara, and young Wills, the wheelwright, has another, making eight, including the puppies. I don't consider the harriers of any value. The Gordon setter is worth about £5; ho is a favorite of mine, and I reared him from a puppy. The terrier is old and valueless. I had originally three guns, two double-barrels and one single. One of the double-barrels I lent to Thomas Colson, and it waß destroyed when Mr. Bayly's slaughterhouse was burned down recently. My average takings while in the Red House Hotel might be about £20 a week, but I can't say to a ponnd or two. The business was falling off latterly. I havo never settled any property for the benefit of my wife or children. I owed Mr, Morris, of O.ikura, for oatH and straw, etc, about £15, before I Jeft the Taranaki Hotel. I had a pair ef black ponies, for which I paid £25 two years ago — they are now about 18 years' old. A fortnight last Tuesday, I gave the horses to Mr. Morris to square the account. He came to me, and wanted the money for his oats, &. Itcldhim 18 months' ago that ho could have security over these horses. At the time I gave gave him the ponies 1 had no ideal wonld Lave to go bankrupt. I paid Mr. Paul £44 15s. since I went into the Red House Hotel. I havo had more than that value of beer during the same period. I naid £25 in cash to Mr. Samuel for stamp duties and transfer of license, bdng cash paid by him ; also, £25 interest, and £14 insurance to Messrs. Sclanders & Co., and other payments to other people, for which receipts are in the safe. I paid Mr. W. HumphiieK for two gallons of brandy, and iir. VVeyergang's account in cash, <.-s shown by receipt. I authorised Mr. Paul (in writing) to cell tho Red House Hotel if I could not puy £800 owing on bin rcnrtgage by a certain date, but 1 don't know whnt nrrarisTfinenttJ ho has tirade.

It will be noticed in nn advcrlibniiK-i.t that Altpsrp. Klaus and Brown have com menood a night pchool in Nth Dou»hert)'B tcho:il mom. Tlu'u will mipply a nn<»\ want in Now Pl^montj>, nnd, as the terms are very modeiate, the Kcho'pl ought to hiwell patronised.
