ANNUAL MEETING OF THE RIFLES BAND.
The annual meeting of the Taranaki Rifles Band tooa place in the bandroom on Tuesday night, when there was a full attendance of members, the President (Mr. J. Paul) presiding. The secretary (Mr. H. Cholwill) read the balance-sheet, which was not accompanied by its usual adjunct —a report. The balance-theet showed that there was a debit of £23 0* lid. The receipts for the year were X2li 7s 7d ; the expenditure was £237 S.* 6d. The secretary stated that he had received honorary subscriptions to tho amount of £32.'
The Fresident said the balance-sheet was very satisfactory, on the whole, considering the very depressed times. He thought that the Band could anticipate between £20 and £25 from the ball to be held on the 9th November, and the proceeds from "Pinafore," which the Amateur Opera Club had kindly cons n nted to play for the Band's benefit, would doubtless be substantial. The progress made during the year just ended, under the able tuition of Mr. Garry, was great, and he considered that if similar progress was made during the ensuing year the Band would rank as one of the best in the colony. (Applause.) Mr. Cholwill, the secretary', he said, had conducted his onerous duties in a manner that entitled him to the thanks of the members; and tbe public also were deserving of much thanks for the way they had supported the band. He then moved the adoption of the balance-sheet, which wus carried nem con.
On Corporal Newell's motion a hearty vote of thanks was passed to all who had given the Band support, pecuniarily , and otherwise.
The election of a committee and several officers was next held, the former being the President, Judge Rawson, and Mr. R. B. Roy, ex officio, and Messrs. Newell, Perry, Philips, Mooseman, and Arden. Bandsman Mooseman was appointed Bergeant in lien of Sergeant Ardeu (resigned); Bandßtnan F. Newell, corporal; and Bandsman Oakes librarian, in place of Bandsman Frank Newell, resigned. On the secretary's suggestion Mr. W. J. Shaw was elected auditor. The question of vesting the Band'B instruments, valued at about £100, in trustees was brought forward by the secretary, who thought that in caseofanydisunioa among members that would lead to the breaking up of the band, the necessity of suoh a step was obvious. It was finally decided to vest the instruments in the trusteeship of the President, Judge Rawso i, and Mr. R. B. Roy. Votes of thanks were accorded to the retiring officers for past servi' cc, and the matter of the ball was discussed. Mr. Paul offered to see this under weigh. The President and Mr. *R. B. Roy were then tendered votes of thanks for their valuable assistance to the Band; and in replying for himself and Mr. Roy, the former said that should it ever be in his power to do the Band any future service he would do so with pleasure. (Applause.) After a few minor questions weie discussed, the meeting terminated in the usual way.
