MEETING OF BATEPAYEES, MOKAU RIDING. [from our own correspondent.]
A well-attended moeting of ratepayers of the above ridinar was held on Saturday evening 1 last, at tho Star Hotel. Mr p J. Pjgott was voted to the chair, and stated that the meeting had bppn called by Rome of tho ratepayers to take into consideration tho that would likely come forward for tho County at tho general election to be held in November. The meeting would be alnd to listen to any remarks any ratepayer had to make. Mr. Hugh 1 bvinf, J.P., stated that ho was one who had originated the calling of the meeting, and he considered that at the cominer election the ratepayers ought to put in three men as members who were residents in theMokau Riding to represent them in the County Council. j Messrs. Wise, Irvine, Pitfott, and Halcombe were brought forward, and it was ultimately decided thut Mpssrs. Wise, Irvin?, and Halcombo be the members supported at the coming election. Mr. Halcombe stated that he left himself entirely in the hands of the ratepayers. He was clad to see by tho balance-sheet, and assets and liabilities, endinsc March, 1887, that the Council was in a fair position financially. He thought Ihe number of members in the Council, viz., six, was a very awkward one; there should be seven members. After some more discussion on County matters, a vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
