DEATH OF LADY BRASSEY.

Tun death of Lady Brassoy on September 14, on board the yacht Sunbeam, has caused several to enquire respecting her history. The following will, therefore, be read with interest: — Lady Brasscy, author of " A Voyage in the Sunbeam," was tho daughter of tho late Mr. Jol.u Allnutt, of Charles- street, Berkeloy-square. In 1860 she was married to Mr. (now Lord) Brassoy. Lidy Brassey always had a prodilection for travelling, and usually made opious notes of the principal incHents of her journey, and the impressions produced on her mind by what she had seen. Iv this way the " Voyage in the Sunbeam " was written; not with any idea of publicition, but simply to aomso her father, the notca being sent to him from time to time from various ports at which the Sunbeam touched. Copies wore afterwards made for a few private friends; but at length she was prevailod upon to publish her travels in book form, which she did in 1878. It hns passed through four oilitions ; an abridged edition appeared in 1879, and an adaptation for school and class reading in 1880. In 1881 a sixpenny edition was published. The King of the Sandwich Islands invested her with the Order of Kapiolani, in recognition of hor description of his kingdom, and of tho hobpitality extondod to him at Normanhurst Caatlo in July, 1881. Lady Brassey is also the author of "Natural History of a Voyage in the Sunbeam," 1878 ; "Sunshine and Storm in the Ea3t. or (Jiuises to Cyprus and Constantinople," 1880 ; and tho letter-press to " Tahiti, a series of Photographs," taken by Colonel Stuart Wortley, 1882.. For private distribution she has printed "The Flight of the Meteor," an account of two cruises in the Mediterranean, and travels in the Enst, aud "A Voyago in the Eothen," which dcßoribosher trip to Canada and tha Unitod States in 1872. She has also been ing'rumental in establishing centres of tho Bt. John Ambulance Association ; and in November, 1881, was elected v. Dame Cheoalitre of tho Order of St. John of Jerusalem in England,
