MR. WM. COURTNEY'S MISSION TO ENGLAND.

The following letter was received by us by tho last mail from Mr. Courtney, detailing what he is doing at Home :—: — By the R.M.S. Rimutaka only five go to Taranaki. Mr. Chu rches, a Kentish farmer, goes to Mr. William Bayly for a year before taking up land himself. Mr. and Mrs. Blinkham having been brought up on a farm, would take a place aa married couple with a good farmer. Mr. Plurnmer would take a place in a 9tore, or would be prepared to go in for a little business, and Mr. Clifton would like a billet on a farm, as it is the work he ia accustomed to.

Last mail came home without a single order, and this one has only brought one order from Stratford , which will be sent next month.

I can hear by side issues that the young men I have sent out are pleased with their homes, and that their employee are pleased vith them, but with the exception of Mr. Sherwood, who is with Mr. Davis, of Waiongona, not one has sent a line to say so. I am much indebteu to him for having written.

It is too lafce now to send more orders, as I leave here on the 17th November, but if I had even so small an amount of supl ort from those whom I have tried to benfit, as well ns mvtelf, the number going to-day would af- be only five Bouls. The only way to get at people is to be able to advertise for something, and that you give geneial information. Now had not Mr. Bayly given me hi der 1 would not have been able to advertise, and thereby I have a farmer going out with me with some means, and Mr. Bayly, fur his part, has a man who is a credit to hia country, and will also be a credit to Taranaki. -Had others come forward in the same wa\ as Mr. Bayly we would be able to have "more farmers and more steady young men. lam not afraid of the ultimate verdict as to the class of young fellowß who have gone through me.

I have seen a good deal in this office of people from all parts of the world complaining of bad times, and in Taranaki they are better off than many other places, i£ they only Knew it. I have just seen a letter from Mr. Jones, who, with his brother, was with Mr. Breach, but who are now on 400 acres of land of their own, and nothing can exceed the nice way in which he writes of the district and his confidence in its future, and that 1 have only fairly represented things to them. Such testimony is most gratifying, and now their brother is going to join them, and ultimately their father will. I hope to send a larger lot by the Ruapehu, and to have a fair number out with me, leaving on the 17th November. Sarnia Ilouse will find any of those by the Rioiulaka. Excuse my using your columns in the interest of the new arrivals, but I know you are free in helping those who will appreciate it. W. COOBTNEY. 16 Bishopgate-street Within, London, August 14, 1887.
