CHRISTIAN CHARITY,

TO THE EDII'OK,

Sir, — Your short, yet nevertheless well put remarks tho otlrsr day respecting the lack of Christian charity must in the future, it is hoped, stimulate the zeal of those of a benevolent mind who are desirous o£ benefiting their fellow-creatures in noed. The case at Island Bay, for instance, supplies an account of destitution appalling iv the extreme in this colony; such as bus not for some time been disclosed to the public. Doubtless others are suffering privation amongst us who do not make their wants known, or who would rather suffer than become dependent on public or private charity. A cas 'of this kind had to bo made public in cur own district the other day. I cannot conceive a more excruciatiug death than that caused by stai v;itio:i, and the papers ia the whole colony should not Oe remiss in bringing public criticism to bear upon the inhumanity of those whose business it is to relieve want in all such casts. What a terrible state things are coming to ? Where are the philanthropise amongst the people of Wellington ? Ministers of religion and such like should make it their duty to see to such mitters. Can any turn a deaf ear to the supplications of one begging for the staff of life to support him and his children? Yes ! so it seems, appirently. What inhuman consideration. Surely the matter requires looking into. It is lo be hoped thai ere this those whose tmsiuess it is to relieve their suffering creature's wants have received the censure they &o justly deserved. We can only picture to ourselves the heart-aching he must have endured, not to speak of the agony of mind such a condition of circumstances entails on all who have to meet stern want in the face, and feel themselves powerless in trying to supply their needs. None, I should hope, cau think for a moment on the conJition of such like mortals without being disposed to lelieve them iv pressing want. — I am, &c, Chabity.
