THE HARBOUR ACCIDENT FUND

TO THE EDITOR.

1 Sir, — Allow me to correct a statement « which appe-ired iv your columns last ni^ht, ruspacting :in application for assistance troin the Harbour Bjard by one of its fouuor employes. Tho engineer is somewhat astray in what he stated when intimation that the applicant was '• not a contributor to ths acci lent fund at the time of the accident." Why ho was not so I will tell you. It was simply because thero was no such fuud in existence at that time, it bcin^ formed some time ai'tcr.varde, while the poor man was in the Hospital. Through the injuries he received he was unable to do anything for two >ears and four mouths. He was then employed as watchmin on the works, but was discharged after a shore time. Tne reason being that he was not smart enough. After some time he was employed at ba^-m.ikinj, which ho could do with satisfaction to his employers, but strange to say he was always one oE the first to be discharged when the Board was shortening hands. At tho time of the accident which made the poor man a crippie for life, th Q io were two others hurt also, and when tho fund was formed these unfortunate men were allowed sick pay till tho works stopped in 1880, when theit pay was stopped. The other two men quite recovered from their injuries, but not this uufortuuate man, who, as I have mentioned, is a cripple for life; in fact ho ia in tno hospital at the present tiint>. In referdnje to tho mm that died, that happened some lime betoro tho applicant came to New Plymouth; in fact both accidents happened before Mr. Rhind came here. I may state, in conclusion with the affair, that the unfortunate man was ono of tho first of the number who started tho accident fuud, and ho also was a subscriber to the same. It is now over sevoa years ago since the accident happened, and 1 think the man is worthy oi: sympathy from the Board.

Hoping, therefore, that tho Boaad will help him till such a time when he will be employed by the engineer, — L am, &c, Sympathy.
